A carbon offset is a tool designed to reduced our greenhouse gas emissions. A business owner purchases the offset. The money for the offset goes toward projects such as reforestation or the development of alternative energy sources, such as solar power. On a larger scale, corporations that are subject to emissions caps trade carbon credits in an international market. A monetary value is assigned to a unit of carbon, and companies can trade these units to comply with the cap. A company that emits a lot of greenhouse gas can purchase a credit from a company that emits little.
